John Folsom | Organist
John Folsom has been playing piano since taking childhood lessons and woodwind instruments since high school band days. While in college, the organist at his church abruptly quit at the start of Advent, and he was “volunteered” to step in because he could play the piano. He “filled in” at that church and became self-taught until college graduation and the start of his first career as a USN submarine officer (no piano or organ on submarines). Upon retirement from active service 20 years later, he and his family settled in Virginia Beach as he started his second career and started attending Nimmo UMC. When the church occasionally needed a substitute organist, he stepped in despite having no organist credentials in his resume. When the church added a second Sunday morning service, he became the early service weekly organist. When long-time late service organist Charles Daws retired , John added the 11:00 Sunday service to his resume as well as piano accompanist for Nimmo’s youth and adult choirs. He is dedicated to Christ and Christian music, as well as other classical and modern music.
